Happy 16th Birthday To My Son
Hey Bryce, it’s dad up to his old tricks …… writing you a blog on your 16th birthday. I know, I know. It’s probably not the coolest thing ever and most likely quite embarrassing but I wanted to share just a few things with you. Afterall, today is a big day. The BIG Sweet 16. So from me and your mom let me begin by saying Happy 16th Birthday, son.
I am both happy and sad as I type Happy 16th Birthday to you. I am happy because of the person you are growing up to be. A young boy quickly becoming a young man. And I might add, a very handsome, intelligent, caring and loving young man. I can say this because you are mine but I don’t know of another young man your age that is more caring and compassionate about those you interact with on a daily basis. You teach me much as I watch you interact with others (specifically your younger brother) daily. I am so proud of you son.
I find myself selfishly sad in the same breath. I have said it hundreds of times to other parents and just a few weeks ago it really hit me that you have grown up so quickly. Right before my very eyes. Very selfishly I want to see you as this innocent little boy who I can protect from a very broken and messed up world. A little boy whose smile can melt my heart. A little boy whose words bring a huge smile to my face. A little boy who takes his first steps, wins his first ball game, accepts Jesus into his heart, clings to his mom’s leg the first day of preschool ……. selfishly I want all of those but the reality is that you are growing up. You are 16 and before we know it you will be 21. I’m not even going there! I am so happy for the young man you are becoming.
I want you to know just a few things before I stop writing:
Turning 16 is cool but it’s not easy. Please continue to place God as the number one priority in your life and seek his will for your life in all that you do. Make him the center of your life at all times. Make reading the bible and prayer a regular in your life.
You can be and do anything you want. You truly have the opportunity to change the world.
Continue to surround yourself with positive influence. Choose your friends very wisely. Who you hang out with tells a lot about you!
Your mother is the most important female in your life. I have said this in previous posts but if your future wife is anything like your mother, you hit a home run.
Find ways to serve and lead others. You will experience much joy and happiness as a servant leader.
Laugh and have fun. Life is much too short to not enjoy it fully.
Your little brother is literally attempting to walk in your footsteps and I am so thankful for that. You are a role model for him and so many others. Always remember the influence you have on those around you.
Lastly, don’t forget your dad. I hope when I am 90 and your 66 that we are still hanging at the beach, throwing football, shooting basketball, laughing and having fun. Who knows …… by that time you may be Twitter famous or something! In all seriousness, I want to always be a part of your life as you continue to grow into a man.
So Happy Birthday Bryce. I am very proud of you and the young man you are becoming. I love you.
