I love Twitter. Many who know me would say that I am addicted to it. They may be on to something! I wouldn’t say I am addicted but for me Twitter is my source for all things news taking place in the world. If it’s happening, folks are tweeting about it. I am not saying that everything that is tweeted is credible …… in fact, much is not!

I should note that I am no Twitter expert and, as a matter of fact, I have never taken any formal training on how to effectively use Twitter, how to build followers or how to get fav’s and retweets. I have only been using Twitter regularly since 2012. I wish I had embraced the platform way back in 2006.

I get asked often about my followers. What secrets and strategies that I use to gain new followers. Currently, I have just under 8,000 followers and am steadily adding a few new followers daily. I am such an “Average Joe” so why in the world would almost 8,000 accounts want to follow me? I would like to think I am funny, entertaining, inspiring, motivating and all the things that most successful tweeters are but I’m not topping the charts in any of those categories.

So what are my “non-expert” tips for growing my Twitter followers?

Everyone starts at “0” – all new accounts start with zero followers and are following zero accounts. For me, the most frustrating part in the beginning was making the mistake of watching my number of followers! Basically watching them not grow at all. I vividly remember thinking will I ever get to 10, 50, 100, 250, 500 ……. there’s no chance I will ever get to 1K.

Tip #1 – Don’t get frustrated with your lack of followers and give up. Getting started and sticking with it is half the battle.

Don’t Follow Just Anyone/Everyone – all of us follow our favorite music stars, sports stars, motivational leaders and others …… some of them follow back, most don’t. Twitter has follow limitations which literally don’t allow accounts to follow over a certain number/percentage.

Tip #2 – Limit those you follow to your most favorite interests and accounts who will follow back. There’s nothing wrong with asking for a “followback” occasionally. Twitter is meant to be interactive and social.

Hashtags, Hashtags, Hashtags – for me personally hashtags are where I have gained the highest and most relevant number of followers. Early in my Twitter life, I searched for people …… today I search hashtags. Hashtags connect you with both people and content.

Tip #3 – Search hashtags not people.

Tweet, Retweet and Fav – Twitter is designed to be social. Everyone has their own niche ……. find yours, tweet it and retweet & fav others. Engage in conversation with others. Building relationships is important to growing your followers.

Tip #4 – Create and/or find relevant content. Tweet It. Retweet It. Fav It.

Join Twitter Chats – Twitter chats use a hashtag to follow (usually for an hour) a conversation. Chats provide a great opportunity to connect with others with similar interests. There are hundreds/thousands of chats every week. If you are interested in leadership chats, you can try #leadwithgiants or #leadwithin.

Tip #5 – Engage in Twitter chats to engage in conversation. Be social. Don’t just follow the chat but follow those engaged in the conversation.

So are you frustrated that your Twitter followers aren’t increasing at a high rate? Are you ready to give up? Don’t give up just yet! Try the tips above for a few months and check your results.
